The primary goal of BVDV control should be to prevent the persistence of BVDV.
Preventing the exposure of pregnant animals to BVDV within the first 5 months of gestation will break the cycle of BVDV persistent and will prevent the maintenance and/or development of persistent infections. The exposure to BVDV may occur by acute or persistent BVDV infections. Therefore, identification and removal of persistently infected animals is vital to preventing exposure. In addition, the isolation of pregnant animals from animals undergoing acute infections is important to prevent exposure. Vaccination against BVDV is used to reduce the risk of losses when preventive management is compromised.
