BVDV immunohistochemistry (IHC) involves the detection of viral antigen (protein) directly in tissues. Tissues may be fresh-frozen or preserved in fixative such as 10% formalin. Most commonly, immunohistochemistry is performed on formalin fixed tissues. The presence or absence of viral antigen is determined by microscopic examination.

Samples may include:
  • any tissues collected at  post-mortem
  • fetal tissues
  • skin biopsies
  • ear notch samples

Important points regarding immunohistochemistry:

  • batching samples in multiples of 6 will decrease total costs
  • samples must be sent to lab and processed within 2 weeks of collection
  • acute infections are not identified by IHC testing of skin samples

Click to find out how to collect ear notch samples.

Positive ear notch
Negative ear notch

Multiple ear notch (IHC) sampling will cost
approximately $4.50 each.

Positive results indicate that the animal is persistently
infected with BVDV.
